Do you love to fish? What do you love most about it? Is it the challenge of snagging a bite, conquering nature or is it just the general tranquility of the magnificent recreational fishing environments we often see on television specials about fishing?

Imagine yourself on a fishing vacation. What comes to mind? The drive to the location can be resplendent in itself as you bounce along a less traveled road surrounded by nothing but trees and majestic mountains along the way.

And then you see it…

…the rushing water over the bulging rocks and boulders, a beautiful sight and sound.

…the fish splashing through the water surface to grab what morsels they can. You KNOW you are in the right place at the right time.

Are you fly fishing or trout fishing? What gear do you need? Have you studied the habits of the fish so you can compete with their minds for the win? Will you eat the fish for nourishment or catch it for sport and throw it back to safety - all the smarter for the next fisher I imagine…

Fish are an interesting topic to consider. It’s so interesting that many use fishing as a concept rather than a sport. We notice fish swim in “schools” and when fed we often call it a “feeding frenzy.”

When fishing for real fish, the odds are in the fisher’s favor when a “school” of fish is located. When fish are hungry, they go into a rash feeding frenzy once fed.

When considering fishing as a business concept, it is often referred to in business in terms of a visual for how to choose a profitable niche for your business. As in fishing we are advised to find a pool of hungry fish and give them what they hunger for.

What are people hungry for that if you could provide it they would come in vast “schools” resulting in a “buying frenzy” to feed their appetites? Study where the best “fishing” locations are and what “bait” will cause the frenzy. When you have mastered the ability to choose wisely where to anchor and put out your bait, you will have a grand catch for not only a day, but for life.

As you discover your “school of hungry fish” niche, remember to note that the fish who have been caught and thrown back are wiser with each time they are caught. Constantly offer them more and more resistible products and services. It’s natural they you get better and better and choosing and offering the best “bait” as well as a fisher does who masters the art of fishing.

Consider your business an art and treat your “fish” with respect and awe. Remember, we people are a part of nature as well as those real fish. It’s a beautiful sight to see the fish swimming happily and confidently along before they learn to run and hide at the site of the fisher. Use your products and services to draw people to you as the fisher does with the bait.

Use the highest quality gourmet offerings and potential clients and customers will indulge in a veritable feeding frenzy upon your wisdom and services. And unlike with real fish, these can be loyally “hooked” on YOU for years to come.

We all do it. We’re planning our family camping trip, and the only food on the list are things we can poke on a stick to hold over the fire. Well, that’s ok if you’re 10 years old, but camping doesn’t have to be quite so predictable.

Part of the fun and charm of roughing it in the great outdoors is the food, however, you don’t have to be ‘all-out’ pioneers. There are some really delicious and ‘fun’ camping recipes that incorporate the conveniences of this century that everyone should include in their camping preparations.

If you have a reliable cast iron skillet and Dutch oven, you can create wonderful campfire food for your family and friends to enjoy on your next trip. Add some other clever cast iron utensils, such as a pie or sandwich iron, and then the real fun begins. You can cook up pies, pizzas and more.

Here are a few simple, yet delicious, camping recipes that you’re sure to love.

Camping Fun Pizza

8 oz. pizza or spaghetti sauce
1 lb Wheat bread
1/4 lb Mozzarella cheese
Pepperoni

Using the pie iron, take two slices of bread, put 1 1/2 tablespoons pizza sauce on one slice of bread. Top with Mozzarella cheese and sliced pepperoni. Place other side of bread on top and butter outer sides of bread. Put sandwich into pie iron and place in coals of fire. Cook until bread is toasted.

Banana Boat

1 Banana
Mini marshmallows
Chocolate chips
Raisins

Partially peel banana. Cut wedge-shaped section in banana. Remove wedge. Place in hollow: marshmallows, chocolate, and raisins. Cover mixture with banana peel and wrap in foil. Place in coals for about 5 minutes, until chocolate and marshmallows are melted.

Fried Rice for Campers

1 pk Precooked rice
2 c Boiling water
1 cn Spam -diced
1 Envelope fried rice-seasoning mix

Place rice in small bowl; pour boiling water over. Cover and let stand 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork. Mix in Spam and seasoning mix. Transfer mixture to medium skillet. Cook over medium heat 5 minutes, stirring often.

No it isn’t Bill Gates. It isn’t the diamond merchants of South Africa or the oil barons of Saudi Arabia either. The world’s highest paid job is crab fishing in Alaska. The frigid waters off the Alaskan shoreline house a veritable fishing goldmine and crab fishing in Alaska has been aptly dubbed the last great gold rushes on earth.

Crab fishing is the most significant of the Alaskan commercial shellfish industries. The waters of Alaska, notably the Bering Sea, Bristol Bay, Dutch Harbor and the Kodiak and Aleutian Islands are home to rich bounties of crabs: tanner, Dungeness and the famed Alaskan King crab.

The different varieties of the Alaskan crabs possess immense commercial value and the Alaskan King crab in particular is a prized dish in the culinary world, valued as highly as caviar or vintage French wine. US and Japanese restaurants are the primary importers of Alaskan King crab in the world.

An idea of the valuation of crab fishing in Alaska can be garnered from the fact that a seasoned fisherman can hope to rope in US$50000 worth of catch in an eight-week period.

The commercial crab fishing industry in Alaska had its beginning way back in 1950. The returns were promising from the very start and the region quickly attracted hundreds of US fishing boats. The 1980s were the heydays of crab fishing in Alaska. During this period of king crab boom, the fishing boat captains regularly earned US$150000 in a season and the crab fishing boats boasted of saunas, music systems and microwaves.

But by 1983, the Alaskan King crab industry crashed for no apparent reason. The worst slump in fishing history, it forced fishermen to look into alternative fishing sources. Thus Alaskan commercial fishing branched out either to salmon and halibut or bairdi and opilio, two types of tanner crabs.

Since then the Alaskan crab fishing trade has looked up a little with the year 2001 bringing in 23.2-million pounds of fishing stock worth US$36-million. But crab fishing in Alaska still continues to command the highest pay packet in the world.

But this is only the rosy side to the job. Crab fishing in Alaska is one of the most perilous of all jobs in the world. To fish for crabs in the glacial waters of the Arctic Ocean in sub-zero temperatures, with pounding waves thrashing on the deck and tossing the fishing boat treacherously and icy winds howling continuously, needs a stout heart and an able body. Furthermore, your work will involve negotiating the enormous crab pots and coils of line along the slippery deck.

Each and every muscle and sinew of the body is stretched to the hilt and exhaustion to the point of breakdown is common. Crippled limbs, crushed fingers and ribs, broken legs are the staple fare in the grueling 20-21 hour daily schedules, while men toppling overboard are not uncommon incidents either. In fact, every year there are some casualties in these fishing trips.

However, in spite of all the hardships, there is no dearth of men seeking employment in this fishing trade. Crab fishing in Alaska remains a haloed job to land.
