Fly Fishing for Trout in Montana

Tip! Dress for the occasion. If you’re ice fishing, don’t forget thermal underwear and insulated footgear.

There is something about fishing for trout that reminds me of my favorite vacations. Nothing is quite as relaxing and mentally stimulating at the same time. I’ll never forget my first image of what fly fishing for trout is really like. The movie “A River Runs Through It” takes place in Montana. It follows the lives of two brothers who fly fish their local streams in Montana with their father. It was not long after my father took me to see that movie that we took our first trip out west. Being from Florida, I loved being on the open water and fishing for Red Fish or Snapper with a spin casting rod and reel. Having done this most of my life, I was intimidated by the images I had seen on the big screen. I was not sure I could learn a new art of fishing that looked so fluid.

Tip! If a boat is used to catch crabs, you should use and drop cone nets with the bait tied to the bottom center of the drop net. This technique can also be used if fishing from a bridge.

Montana is a wonderful state that is about as large as California and has 1/30th of the population. I had never seen such wide open spaces. Wintertime skiing in Montana had been my only experience out there, and it was a completely different experience. We stayed in Big Sky and traveled all around that area in search of the best spots. Luckily we had a native Montanan with us who had fished the state since childhood. He knew every hot spot like the back of his hand. All I had to do was learn the new art of fly fishing.

We set out to a prairie that had a river on it that meandered like something you’ve seen on a postcard. This was after the three mile hike in from the road that started with a sign reading “Beware of grizzly bears”. To start out, I had loaded my line with a Mepps lure so that I did not have worry about bait while I practiced. To cast you let out a couple of feet of slack and also hold a couple of feet of line in your free hand. Wave the rod forward and back with mainly just your wrist, you get the feel for the weight of the rod and the line. While doing this you just search the opposite bank for some still water.

Tip! For trout fishing, the leader should not be greased. It will not sink far enough to cause any difficulty when picking the line and lure from the water, but if it is allowed to float; it will cast a shadow on the bottom of the stream which may scare the trout.

Trout love to wait in the still water for food to pass by with the current. Then you simply cast just upstream from the still inlet that you spotted releasing the extra line that is in your free hand to extend the cast. By letting the current do the work you can dangle the lure near the hole to entice the trout. It takes less time than you think to master fishing with a fly rod and you quickly learn that finding the right spot is the difficult part that comes with years of practice.

Fishing with a fly hook is not much different, but floats on the water. It can get frustrating and first and if you find your self with an empty creel, just ask a local where Loveland Pass is. This is a small lake that is stocked with trout. It’s got a great view of the mountains and it is just off of the highway. It’s a local secret and you can catch as many fish as you desire.

Tip! There are different methods of crab fishing, which are quite cost effective and others that need a lot in terms of money and time. You can use a dip net to catch the crabs.

What Makes Effective Fly Fishing Flies?

Tip! This might be the first time that the family is going to the lake. It will be a good idea to ask if there is a guide that will be able to direct the people to the best fishing site.

As any experienced lover of fishing knows, the type of fly makes all the difference when it comes to catching fish. But what exactly makes a truly effective fishing fly? There’s a lot more to making an artificial bug on a hook than you might imagine. Before heading out on your next fishing trip, do a little research online about the companies that make the fishing flies you are considering purchasing and compare their fly making process with the basic standards of a well crafted fishing fly.

Master Craftsmanship

Fly tying is an art that takes years to truly perfect. Just like a homemade apple pie from a tenured baker tastes better than any bulk manufactured pie could ever hope to taste, a professionally hand crafted fishing fly makes all the difference.

Fishing flies require a highly organic look and feel that machines can’t completely replicate. People who have a passion for fishing and have been using fishing flies on a regular basis for years understand what works and what doesn’t.

Chemically Sharpened Hooks

No matter how effective the fly, if your hook doesn’t snare the fish then it’s game over. Regular hooks, shaped only by mechanical sharpening, have slight ruts and imperfections. The process is similar to sharpening a knife on a sharpening stone.

Tip! It is not good practice when fishing for trout to fish directly upstream so the flies, line, and leader will float directly over fish. The fisherman should make the cast from one side of the stream so the fly will only float over the fish.

Chemical sharpening is the process of taking a mechanically sharpened hook one step further by dipping it into a specific type of acid, making the metal ultra smooth and sharp. A well crafted chemically sharpened hook can sear through flesh and rigid bones quickly, meaning fewer close calls for fish and more catches for you.

Whiting Farms Feathers

A fishing fly made from a high quality grizzle rooster cape will outperform a dyed fabricated feather time and again. Whiting Farms feathers are the absolutely highest quality in fishing fly materials and are standard among fly tying craftsman.

Bass Fishing System.

The difference between Whiting Farms feathers and imitations is that Whiting Farms chickens have been specifically bred since the 1960’s to achieve the precise color patterns most attractive to fish. Whiting Farms feathers keep their shape and move naturally in the water.

Environmentally controlled storage facility

A fishing fly is made up of organic feather material, glues, and metals that can be negatively affected by unfavorable storage conditions over long periods of time. Facilities that are too hot can cause glues to dry and crack. Too damp of an environment can cause the metals to tarnish.

To maintain their high quality, fishing flies must be stored in a controlled environment with adequate temperature, humidity, and air quality. Materials should be well packed to ensure that they arrive in tact with the feathers fluffed and hooks perfectly shaped.

Choosing the right fishing fly may very well make the difference in the quantity and quality of fish you catch on your next trip. Before investing in your fishing flies do some research on the craftsmanship of various companies and look for the essential elements that make an effective fishing fly.

Tip! If a boat is used to catch crabs, you should use and drop cone nets with the bait tied to the bottom center of the drop net. This technique can also be used if fishing from a bridge.
